DIY Halloween Mask Ideas: Reveal and Layered Looks

By the Devil's Dreamworld studio · · 2 min read

The best Halloween masks do something unexpected. A straight scary face is fine, but a mask that hides a second face, or layers two looks into one, is what makes people do a double take. Here are some DIY Halloween mask ideas built around that idea, plus fixes for the problems makers usually hit.

The reveal mask: two scares in one

A reveal mask hides a horror beneath a more innocent outer layer, then opens to show what is underneath. One reliable approach is a rigid resin base with a burlap outer face, finished with gore effects, and a removable front cover held on with hidden magnets. Lift or pull the cover and a rotting face is revealed beneath. Magnets are the key, because they let the cover come away cleanly and snap back without straps or velcro on show.

Layering masks for a custom look

You do not always need to build from scratch. Layering an existing mask over another can create something new. A sugar skull or decorative mask worn over a full head mask, then raised to reveal a putrid face underneath, gives you two costumes in one. If you have short hair and a mask tends to sit in front of your face rather than on it, a second base mask underneath can fill the gap and hold everything in place.

Build ideas to try

  • Innocent porcelain face that lifts to a cracked, rotten one
  • Scarecrow sack that opens to expose a skull
  • Clean mask over a bloody mask for a before and after reveal
  • Hinged jaw or panel that drops to show teeth

Common DIY problems and fixes

  • The mask sits in front of your face. Add a fitted base layer or foam padding so it sits closer, and reshape the eye holes to your sightline.
  • Paint cracking on flex points. Use flexible paints and a flexible sealer, and avoid thick rigid layers where the mask bends.
  • Latex tearing. Reinforce thin edges and store the mask flat, not folded.
  • Cannot see or breathe. Open the eye and nose areas more than you think you need, comfort makes or breaks the night.

Make it yours

Reveal and layered masks reward a bit of planning, but the payoff is a costume nobody else will have. If you want the effect without the build, a custom reveal piece can be commissioned to your exact idea.
